Jazz-soul guitarist and composer Thom Douvan grew up in Ann Arbor listening to the Motown sounds close to the very source as the 45-rpm singles hit the streets in nearby Detroit. Later, after a stint at the Berklee School of Music in Boston, Thom returned to his roots in Detroit where he played for many years with several of the original Funk Brothers of Motown (the all-star backup band on the many Motown hits), including first-call Motown pianists Johnny Griffith and Joe Hunter and drummer Richard "Pistol" Allen.
After relocating to the Bay Area, Thom released a jazz organ combo instrumental tribute to the Funk Brothers, Brother Brother (2014), followed by last year's all original jazz CD, All Over Again (2015). All Over Again was actually Thom's second CD of original jazz compositions following his earlier So Shall We Learn (2008).
Thom brings his all-star Bay Area band to The Back Room, featuring Aaron Germain on bass (aarongermain.com), Deszon Claiborne on drums, Steve Carter on piano, and Tony Malfatti on saxophones (tonymlive.com). Thom's quintet will feature music from all three of his CD's, including Thom's original jazz compositions and some jazzy versions of the soul hits of the 1970's through the present - Marvin Gaye through Alicia Keys. There may even be a few special surprise guest vocalists featured during the evening.
