Jazz in the Neighborhood was created by musicians to bring talented artists, developing players, and communities together for live music events. Our programs provide jazz education, support local venues, and enable dedicated professionals to pass a vital legacy on to the next generation.
It's a fresh take on the traditional jam session that we're calling Neighborhood Sessions: Concert-Masterclass-Jam, and you're invited to participate.
Each session has three components: first, a short set by some of our best Bay Area pros, followed by two pre-professional combos who will perform in a masterclass format with critique and advice provided by the pros. The evening ends with a traditional jam where members of the audience will be invited to sit-in.
This session features the traditional jazz trio led by bassist Marcus Shelby with Gaea Schell on piano and Sly Randolph on drums.
Pre-professional combos, who have been referred by local jazz teachers and educators, will perform next.
Audience members can sign-in to play with the pros as well. You can be a pro, semi-pro, jazz student, or just an amateur player, as long as you know the tune by heart. No sheet music or charts will be allowed, except for vocalists, who must provide charts if the song is not in the standard key. Please bring your own instrument unless it's piano or drums.
Tickets are $10 and are available in advance at this link, or at the door the night of the show. Doors open one half hour before show time. We accept cash only at the door (ATMs are nearby). The Back Room is an all-ages, BYOB (for those 21+) space, dedicated to (mostly) acoustic music of all kinds. You are welcome to bring your own adult beverage with no additional corkage fee. If you need more information, or have any questions, please call us: #510-654-3808. Thank you for your support!
