Konarak Reddy is known for his fingerstyle virtuosity, as well as for integrating North Indian (Hindustani) and South Indian (Carnatic) styles of improvisation into his guitar technique. With roots in western classical guitar and the Indian sarod, he studied jazz improvisation at Berklee College of Music and graduated with Honors from the Jazz Guitar Performance Program at the Musician's Institute, Hollywood. Since the '70’s, Konarak has performed and toured with a range of world-class musicians, including Don Ross, Sandor Szabo, Masa Sumide, Claus Boesser-Ferrari, Jacques Stotzem, Peter Finger, Maynard Fergusson, Embryo, and Orexis.
His musical compositions are the sum of his life experiences: his early years in Chennai, listening to the sounds from the temple and the mosque, his mother’s love of Flamenco, colonial India’s fascination with western classical music, rock ‘n’ roll and his own abiding love for Indian classical music.
Konarak Reddy is a regular on the fingerstyle circuit in Europe. He comes to The Back Room soon after playing as a headlining artist at the Canadian Guitar Festival 2016. In India, he hosts a biennial event – World Guitar Nights & All India FingerStyle. For this concert, Konarak will be playing a Gibson Hummingbird. He lives on Infinite Souls Farm and Artists’ Retreat in rural Bangalore, India.
Konarak is delighted to invite on stage an old friend and special guest, local guitarist Teja Gerken. Teja is no stranger to contemporary steel string guitar fans and plays regularly in the San Francisco Bay Area acoustic music scene. Besides performing and recording, Teja is also a music journalist and the founder of the roots music instructional website Peghead Nation and the author of the Taylor Guitar Book.
