Music Against Malaria.JPG

The New Language Ensemble is a youth jazz band that performs creative and classic takes on jazz standards, hidden gems, and original compositions.

The Ensemble is led by Oakland Tech High School student, saxophonist, clarinetist, and composer Nathan Nakadegawa-Lee, who has been awarded two Outstanding Soloist Awards at the Reno Jazz Festival. He is joined by:

Railey Stern-Yen, saxophonist and clarinetist with an Outstanding Soloist Award at the Reno Jazz Festival.

Mary Nguyen, pianist, who has performed in various venues around the Bay Area and has two Outstanding Soloist Awards from the Reno Jazz Festival.

Nick Reeves, classically-trained cellist and jazz bassist, who has performed at the White House with his string quartet The Perfect Fourth, and recently with the pop/rock band One Republic where he was a featured performer.

Gus Hurteau (not shown above), Oakland School for the Arts percussionist and vibraphonist, has performed at Davies Symphony Hall, Carnegie Hall, and received the 2014 Downbeat Award for Outstanding Young Soloist.

This is their second time at The Back Room. Come support live music and have a fun night of old, new, and always exciting jazz!

Tickets are $15 general admission and $10 for students with ID. Advance tickets are available at the link below, or you may purchase your tickets at the door the night of the show. Doors open one half hour before show time. We accept cash only at the door (ATMs are nearby).

The Back Room is an all-ages, BYOB (for those 21+) space, dedicated to (mostly) acoustic music of all kinds. You are welcome to bring your own adult beverage with no additional corkage fee. If you need more information or have any questions, please call us: #510-654-3808. Thank you for your support!
