Syd Straw is a singer, guitarist, songwriter, and scene-maker who has made a career out of helping some of the most interesting people in the world make their music (and they, in turn, have helped her to make three critically acclaimed albums of her own).
A partial list of luminaries she has performed and recorded with includes Pat Benatar, Matthew Sweet, Michael Stipe, Dave Alvin, Wilco, Rickie Lee Jones, John Doe, Ry Cooder, Loudon Wainwright III, Daniel Lanois, Don Was, Richard Thompson, Marshall Crenshaw and Van Dyke Parks...
Although she is a veteran of the large concert stage, she has a special love for the small intimate listening room, and, before trading her L.A. digs for the Vermont countryside, was a regular performer at McCabe's, the celebrated Santa Monica-based listening venue. She'll be there again this month, but this time she is also swinging up north to appear at The Back Room, which she is excited about (and we, of course, are excited to have her). She sent us this mini-bio and invitation:
Syd Straw came out of her mother singing, swinging, and two months premature. She wanted to get going, and to be here now, and now that she is she wants to sing for you and maybe tell some stories, and most of all, to make you happy for a while. ...Geoge Jones, Emmylou Harris, Los Lobos, Dave Alvin...oh heck, just come to the show, we will be having a time of it.
Tickets are $20 and are available in advance at the link below, or at the door the night of the show. Doors open one half hour before show time. We accept cash only at the door (ATMs are nearby).
The Back Room is an all-ages, BYOB (for those 21+) space, dedicated to (mostly) acoustic music of all kinds. You are welcome to bring your own adult beverage with no additional corkage fee.
