Pacific Drive is a traditional bluegrass band with a youthful twist, consisting of four college students and a high school student about to enter college.
With David Thiessen on mandolin, Dana Frankel on fiddle, Jesse Fichman on guitar, Helen Foley on bass and Sam Reed on banjo, they carry a hard-driving groove, with Helen and Jesse sharing lead vocals, and the harmony parts sung by Dana and David. David, Jesse, and Sam grew up in Sonoma County, and David and Jesse began playing bluegrass music at around 7 years old, while Sam began playing banjo in later years.
David also sits in with a less traditional band called One Grass Two Grass, and Jesse is in another band called Blue Summit. Helen grew up in Los Altos Hills and plays guitar as well as the bass. Dana is from Pacifica and began playing the fiddle when she was 5 years old. In addition to Pacific Drive, she also performs in the Dim Lights Bluegrass band with her parents and Larry Cohea.
The members of Pacific Drive became close friends around the time of the Grass Valley Bluegrass Festival 2015, and over time they discovered that their music brought them even closer, and they decided to create a band. It took them a while to decide on a band name: Pacific Drive encompasses each of their paths - from where they each grew up, to the hard driving bluegrass feel of their music.
