Kill Bossa plays the music of the Tropicália movement from Brazil - a music of passion, protest, and innovation whose main progenitors were the monumental musicians Os Mutantes, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil and Tom Ze.
Incorporating equal parts samba, American rock & roll, avant-garde lyrics and a deprecating sense of humor, this revolutionary music pushed the boundaries of what was possible both musically and politically during a repressive military dictatorship in late-sixties Brazil.
Kill Bossa is an American band playing the music of Brazilians who were in turn influenced by American music, especially the Beatles, the Beach Boys and the Rolling Stones. The result is a meta-look at International cross-pollination and the unexpected scope of pop culture, with a danceable samba beat!
This Bay Area supergroup features Roger Riedlbauer, Aaron Novik, Eric Perney, Dave Mihaly, Melody Jeune Ferris and Dina Maccabee.
SF Bay Area resident Karina Deniké is a versatile vocalist, songwriter, collaborator and band leader who moves fluidly from intimate torch song chanteuse, to soul singer, to vocal powerhouse.
"Denike possesses a voice so rich and luxuriant she sounds like she was born to sing any song that comes her way." - KQED’s California Report.
Born in England to Czech dissidents and Berkeley-reared, Deniké original, reflective songs call upon her many influences and styles.
"Echoing the timeless sound of Rickie Lee Jones' classic jazzy early efforts, Under Glass mixes elements of noirish torch songs, Eastern European lullabies, doo-wop, cabaret and finger-snapping '60s soul in a travelogue that journeys across San Francisco.” - KTVU.com.
Performing works from her album Under Glass and beyond, her sextet features local musicians/composers in their own right: Aaron Novik on bass clarinet, Michael McIntosh on piano, James Frazier on guitar, Meryl Press on vocal harmonies, and Jason Levis on drums. Deniké and her band have toured New York, Japan, dOCUMENTA 13 in Kassel Germany and have been presented locally by SFJAZZ, The Contemporary Jazz Museum, SF City Hall Centennial celebration, UnderCover Presents, and the Flower Piano series among others. Under Glass was named one of the "TOP JAZZ ALBUMS OF 2015" by KQED.
In addition to her self-titled group, Deniké has released over 30 albums as a solo artist, band member or guest, and has been on several major and independent labels (MCA, Warner, FatWreckChords, etc.). She has toured extensively worldwide and had her work on many soundtracks and compilations. She is also a current member of NOFX, The Cottontails, Marc and The Casuals, Mr. Lonesome and the Bluebelles, and a past member of Dance Hall Crashers, Stara Nova, and Ralph Carney's serious jazz project among others.
