The Back Room is proud to present Roberta Donnay & the Prohibition Mob Band’s Holiday Party, with special guests. The Prohibition Mob features trumpeter Rich Armstrong (Boz Scaggs), trombonist Mike Rinta (Santana, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter), bassist Simon Planting (Mathilde Santing, Bill Frisell), pianist Sam Cady (Noel Jewkes) and drummer Kelly Fasman (Peter Cetera, Kenny Loggins).
Veteran vocalist Roberta Donnay — whose new album My Heart Belongs to Satchmo, a collection of tunes from the Louis Armstrong songbook of the 1920’s - 1930's is drawing rave reviews — returns from a stirring performance at New York’s famed Birdland Jazz club this month to share her exceptional talents with Bay Area jazz fans at this great music venue.
An award-winning singer-songwriter-producer, Donnay’s music and voice can be heard on film and TV.
Donnay’s interest in roots music was inspired from the radio, performing with Dick Oxtot’s Golden Age Jazz Band, recording with legendary jazz producer Orrin Keepnews, researching lost and obscure material from the Jazz Age, and touring 10 1/2 years as singer/percussionist with Dan Hicks & The Hot Licks.
As a songwriter and performer, Donnay has won an ASCAP Composer Award, the Top Solo Indie Artist in Performing Songwriter Magazine, one of the Best Albums in DownBeat Magazine, and an International Film Music Award.
As a singer and performer, Donnay has opened for, or performed with, George Benson, Bob Dorough, David Grisman, Bela Fleck, John Hammond, Dr. John, Christian McBride, Maria Muldaur, Lewis Nash, Joe Sample, David Sanborn, Leon Russell, Bonnie Raitt, Rickie Lee Jones, Lee Ritenour, Booker T., Tuck & Patti and more.
"[Roberta Donnay's] engagement with the lyrics, her supple sense of time and her soulful, little-girl timbre remind you of Billie Holiday." — Mike Zwerin, International Herald Tribune
"With her singularly enticing sound, few contemporary vocalists are as well suited to dustily vintage material as jazz-blues stylist Roberta Donnay.'“ — JazzTimes
