Grammy-nominated multi-instrumentalist/composer, Brooklyn resident and Berkeley native Peter Apfelbaum returns to his hometown, making his Back Room debut with musicians from his various ensembles.
Longtime collaborators Jeff Cressman (trombone, bass), Paul Hanson (bassoon), Rachel Durling (violin), Will Bernard (guitar) and Deszon Claiborne (drums) are all members of Apfelbaum's Hieroglyphics Ensemble and Sextet and are joined by more recent associates, including saxophonist/vocalist Jill Ryan (like Bernard, from Apfelbaum's NY-based band, Sparkler) and 12-year-old multi-instrumentalist and Apfelbaum protégé Sequoia Denton.
An alumni of the pioneering Berkeley School Jazz project in the 1970's, Apfelbaum combines his jazz roots with avant-garde, experimental, rock and world music influences; in recent years he has focussed more on writing lyrics and poetry in addition to the densely-layered, polyrhythmic instrumental music he has long been known for.
This evening's stripped-down, mostly acoustic performance will also feature originals by his bandmates as well as covers and possibly even some seasonal favorites.
