Guitarist/Composer John Schott’s group Actual Trio celebrates the February 23rd release of ACT II, the group’s sophomore release, with a special concert at The Back Room in Berkeley.
They will joined by Jayn Pettingil (alto), Myles Boisen (guitar), Alan Williams (trombone), and a special guest on sax, to form a once-only powerhouse septet that will tear the roof off.
Ranging from joyful tributes to Sonny Rollins, Lee Konitz and the Golden State Warriors Draymond Green, to an anguished response to the 2016 election, the disc solidifies and deepens the Bay Area trio’s singular identity.
Bassist Dan Seamans (New Klezmer Trio, Lost Trio), and drummer John Hanes (Henry Kaiser, Victor Krummenacher) provide the foundation for Schott’s adventurous-but-accessible compositions, marrying deep pockets and joyful swing to wayward harmonies and spontaneous excursions.
As with their Tzadik debut, the new album was produced by Hans Wendl, whose production credits include Don Byron, Charlie Haden, Ravi Shankar, and Bill Frisell, and recorded at Berkeley’s legendary Fantasy Studios.
Fans who have followed Schott’s work in the groups T.J. Kirk, Junk Genius, and in projects by John Zorn, Tom Waits and Steven Bernstein, will recognize the guitarist’s personal alchemy of blues, jazz, funk, and experimental improv.
For the evening's second set, the group will be joined by David Boyce (tenor) and Alan Williams (trombone).
Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Advance tickets are available at the link below, or you may purchase your tickets at the door the night of the show. Doors open one half hour before show time. We accept cash only at the door (ATMs are nearby).
