The Singer and The Songwriter
The Singer and The Songwriter, the duo of Rachel Garcia and Thu Tran, creates music as vibrant and diverse as their multiracial backgrounds. Since 2012, they have released 3 critically acclaimed albums, charted on the CMJ Top 40 Radio charts, and currently tour nationally, recently performing at the SF War Memorial Opera House.
Rachel Garcia's rich, warm vocal delivery and Thu Tran's dynamic guitar arrangements provide the backbone for original songs that blend swinging jazz, soulful blues, heartfelt folk and modern, honest songwriting to create a unique and compelling sound. The Huffington Post describes Garcia's voice as, “rich and mellow, strong and elegant, delicate and turbulent, all at the same time. Candidly, it’s one of the best female voices around.”
A native of Fukuoka, Japan, Maya Hall moved to San Francisco in 2014 in search of bigger musical pastures. In Japan, where singers are held to high standards in comparison to the United States, Maya had been a part of the music scene as a respected vocalist, taking part in a variety of different acts in Fukuoka and Tokyo. Since moving to San Francisco, Maya has trained herself how to play the guitar in order to write her own songs, and has done so with the same musical agility she reveals when she sings. Like her voice, her guitar playing is equally her own silky and sweet style. When she plays, her chord progressions, dainty riffs, and interesting rhythms match her soul exactly.
