This performance of Cabaret Underground’s A Tribute to Dr. Maya Angelou, starring Dr. Mwanza Furaha, will be the final show in the Bay Area before she relocates to Palm Springs, CA.
The production features a few of Dr. Angelou’s most popular poems and a few more that you may or may not be familiar with. The poems are paired with jazz, blues and calypso compositions, or arrangements by John Coltrane, Duke Ellington, Dr. Angelou and Dr. Furaha.
All of the poems in this production are sung with the exception of “On the Pulse of Morning,” (written for President Clinton's inauguration).
Joining Dr. Furaha on this theatrical journey is the Cabaret Underground Band: Gail Muldrow, guitar & bass; Marciel “Marty” Garner, drums; Melvin ‘Mellow’ Bell, tenor sax; and Ebony Wright, narrator.
Special Guests: Franklin L. Hall, writer, actor, MC and Isaiah Harwood, jazz pianist.
Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door and $5 for children 10 & under. Advance tickets are available below, or you may purchase your tickets at the door the night of the show. Doors open one half hour before show time. We accept cash only at the door (ATMs are nearby).
