“A very swinging drummer who’s mastered the art of coordinated independence” (East Bay Express), Jeremy Steinkoler has been playing drums professionally for over 25 years. His diverse musical experiences have led him to craft a fresh and unmistakable style from an expansive range of influences, from classic New Orleans second-line street beats and funk to the hard-driving be-bop of Max Roach, as well as the sensitive musical stylings of drummers like Steve Gadd and Jim Keltner. He performs regularly with a wide array of musical projects, including his award-winning saxes-and-drums funk trio Mo’Fone and the pop-jazz superstar group Jenna & the Charmers.
In addition to his busy career as a performer, Jeremy has been teaching private drum lessons since 1991, and has become one of the most respected educators in the Bay Area. Along with Steve Gibson, he is the Co-Founder and Co-Director of BandWorks, a school of rock for musicians of all ages with multiple locations around the Bay Area. He is the Founder and Director of the East Bay Drum School, and has been on the faculty of Cazadero Performing Arts Family Camp for the past 23 years, where he was the Co-Director from 1999-2001 and served on the Board of Directors from 2010-2013. He has taught workshops and master classes in Dublin, Ireland; Ann Arbor, MI; and in Northern California for the past 20 years.
Jeremy has authored a book on drumming titled Finding the Groove, a collection of essays and personal narratives on drumming, performing and teaching, available at hudsonmusic.com and on Amazon. Jeremy is proud to endorse Brooks Drums, Aquarian Drumheads, Protection Racket Cases, and Vic Firth Drumsticks.
Sam Rudin is, of course, the owner/creator of The Back Room. He is also a top-notch pianist whose versatility encompasses the whole range of 20th century music. He can evoke the spirit of Fats Waller, Oscar Peterson, Mose Allison, and Jerry Lee Lewis - sometimes all at the same time. He is also a compelling vocalist whose rough-hewn voice conveys both drama and humor.
Jeremy has performed at The Back Room a dozen times with several projects and has become a great friend of the room. It was inevitable that sooner or later he and Sam would make some music together. An open night on the calendar cropped up, and so it was decided.
Now it so happens that Jeremy has recently become friendly with a very strong young bassist who has toured locally and internationally playing jazz, soul, rock and hip hop music - Jesse Strauss. They have been looking for an opportunity to play together, and that opportunity is now here. So what's going to happen? Well, it's kind of a jam session, with just a bit of rehearsal, and Sam calling the tunes. Some will come from his Hurricane Sam & the Hotshots playbook, but most will not. There will be jazz, there will be R&B, there will be funk, and some other stuff that they haven't decided on yet. Most of all, it will be fun - a chance for three great musicians who (except for that little bit of rehearsal) have never played with each other before, to see what they can create together.
