North Country Blue – CD Release Show SOLD OUT, Thank You!

North Country Blue.jpg

North Country Blue emerged in the fall of 2017 and has quickly established itself as one of California’s freshest and finest bluegrass bands. The band includes four young women — just 14 and 15 years of age — from various parts of Northern California, who all share in the vocal and instrumental duties: Daisy Kerr, from Placerville, on guitar and clawhammer banjo; Megan January, from Roseville, on upright bass; Ida Winfree, from Turlock, on mandolin and guitar; and Tessa Schwartz, from Berkeley, on fiddle.

These ladies combine fresh takes on the traditional bluegrass canon, thoughtful covers of challenging modern material, and a number of startlingly mature and well-crafted originals. They have already caught the attention of audiences throughout California and beyond, appearing at Strawberry Music Festival, the Freight & Salvage in Berkeley, the International Bluegrass Music Association’s annual convention in Raleigh, North Carolina, and the Viva Las VeGrass festival in Nevada, among others.

What sets NCB apart is not only their youth or their what-did-they-just-do musicianship, but also their creativity and their willingness to explore and tackle difficult themes and take on difficult songs, all while still respecting bluegrass music’s roots and tradition. The band’s first full-length album, produced by renowned bluegrass musician and instructor Sharon Gilchrist, will be released in February, and includes four original song (as well as one by Ida’s father).

Award-winning bluegrass writer Jon Hartley Fox wrote that NCB’s debut CD “feels to me like an important beginning . . . .It’s an assured, confident and very accomplished first step and a heartening dispatch from the next generation of bluegrass.”
