WENDY BURCH STEEL & REDWOOD play a unique cross-section of genres incorporating all the good and sweet aspects of folk, old-time, country, bluegrass and blues. Bluegrass icon Laurie Lewis produced, played and sang on Wendy’s debut CD Open Wings in 2012, which has received rave reviews nationally and internationally, airplay and interviews on various radio shows, and Americana and Bluegrass publications.
Wendy Burch Steel is known for her deft angelic voice and spiritually touching original material. She was nominated for Female Vocalist of the Year for the past three years by the Northern California Bluegrass Society.
"Wonderful lyrical irony, flawless vocals and lush instrument arrangements combine to make this Americana Blues song an instant classic." - Akademia Award-winning Happy Song Blues
Her band members include some of the best Bluegrass and Americana players and singers in California and beyond: Butch Waller (mandolin and vocals), Glenn Dauphin (guitar and vocals), and Allegra Thompson (bass and vocals). The two-to-four part harmonies are something they've become well-known for, as well as great original songs and picking.
"Wendy's vocals have a warmth and presence that filters through the song lyrics. She can put a bluegrassy purr into a song and her 'Happy Song Blues' has an attractive bounce with bass and fiddle along for the ride….Her 'If I Had Wings' has a magical guitar accompaniment that floats under her lilting vocal." - Brenda Houff, Bluegrass Breakdown
"Wendy Burch Steel's voice is a joy to listen to, and her songs speak from the heart. It was a pleasure to help expose Wendy and her music to a larger audience through the recording of Open Wings. She has been one of the Bay Area's hidden gems for too long." – Laurie Lewis
“Music flows through Wendy Burch Steel like the clear water of her home country of upstate New York. Whether she is writing something that is destined to become a "great old song" of the future, or singing a selection from the great American song bag, Wendy's beautiful, true spirit shines through.” - Joe Newberry
Wendy's songs have been played live and with CD plays on radio shows all over the country, and the world, including KPFA, KQBM, KKUP, KALW, World Wide Bluegrass, OzCat Radio, and many others.
Wendy Burch Steel and Redwood have recently played at the Good Old Fashioned Bluegrass Festival, The Back Room in Berkeley, Armando's in Martinez, Sutter Creek Theatre, First Street Cafe, Vern's Stage at the CBA Father's Day Festival, Parkfield Fiddle Festival, Berkeley Bluegrass Festival and others, and in the past years, she's sung at the Freight and Salvage many times, and many more wonderful venues.
