Ionela Guzic is a talented young singer and a rising star in the world of Romanian traditional music. Ionela is from the city of Târgu Jiu, in the Gorj region of the Românian province of Oltenia, located in Southwestern România.

Ionela has performed with many iconic musicians from România (Ansamblul Doina Gorjului, Ionica Minune, Cristinel Turturica) and Moldova (The Lautarii din Chisinau and Fratii Stefanet). She has received numerous awards at national and international folk music competitions. In 2015, Ionela published the CD Spune-mi mamă ce e doru, an album of songs that represent the beauty of the folklore from the Gorj region where she grew up. The album was received with widespread acclaim and was featured on many radio and television stations in Romania, and helped launch Ionela’s international career, including tours in the United States in 2018 and 2019.

The four musicians of the group Taraf de Bernal first met in the Bernal Heights neighborhood of San Francisco over 20 years ago. All of the musicians have studied and/or performed in Hungary, România and Bulgaria. Jutka Mandoki, Clark Welsh, and David Nebenzahl perform on many exotic, rarely seen musical instruments from Romania, Hungary and the Balkan countries. They were honored to perform a concert featuring Hungarian and Românian music and dance for young audiences at Davies Hall with San Francisco Symphony music director Michael Tilson Thomas in the role of announcer.

Their recordings include the CD Danubius in 2002 on the Web of Mimicry label. For this concert they will be joined by Josh Cohen on bass, violin and viola and Balder ten Cate on cimbalom.

Josh is the music director of the Castro Valley Symphony, and he performs with numerous musical ensembles and orchestras. Balder grew up in the Netherlands, but was steeped in Eastern European music at an early age. He studied cimbalom with Romanian master Giani Lincan. Balder performs regularly with Sergiu Popa, Mahala and Euphonos.
