Dom Pipkin – The Sweet Sounds of New Orleans

Dom Pipkin.jpg

“The soul of New Orleans in the U.K.,” Dom Pipkin is at the forefront of piano players keeping the classic New Orleans sound alive.  With fans ranging from Hugh Laurie to Pee Wee Ellis, Pipkin has performed all around the world, including sharing the stage with Allen Toussaint at New Orleans Piano Night in 2014.

Hailing from London, England, and often found in New Orleans, his first visit to the Bay Area was with British trip hop favorites Morcheeba back in the late 1990s – a band with whom he went on to record and perform with Talking Heads’ David Byrne. However, the blues, and particularly New Orleans piano styles, have always been Pipkin’s calling. He has been extensively featured on BBC national radio on the subject, and he regularly tours his “Smokin’ Boogie” solo show about the history of the music of the legendary Crescent City.

Originally a student at the Royal Academy of Music, Pipkin combines performing in theaters, clubs and festivals all over Europe, with a “day job” of directing the bands of pop and rock stars from behind the keyboards.  His shows mix his own touching and quirky original songs with classics and rockers from the New Orleans genre – you can expect the music of Dr John, Professor Longhair, Fats Domino, and particularly interpretations of the maverick genius James Booker. Pipkin has been asked to play at many screenings of the acclaimed documentary on Bookers tragic and colorful life, Bayou Maharajah, including at its premiere at SXSW in 2012.

His solo shows are a treat: intimate, moving, funky and in-your-face.  A real romp through the heart and soul of New Orleans piano and beyond.
