Trumpeter/composer/songwriter Darren Johnston’s truly unclassifiable ensemble The Pipes is one of his most recent projects, featuring Cory Wright and Steven Lugerner on bass clarinets, along with Jordan Glenn on percussion, and Darren on trumpet and vocals. Each of these musicians is a ubiquitous band-leader, composer and improviser in their own right on the Bay Area music scene and beyond.
Pieces begin with a focus on storytelling and poetry that blossoms into toe-tapping horn honkery, expansive explorations, and tight ensemble playing, touching on a universe of styles and traditions along the way.
Such musical adventuring is only made possible because of the broad musical interests and experience of those involved, who have collectively played with a diverse cast of luminaries from the worlds of jazz, improvised and “new” music, Balkan brass, reggae, rock, R&B, Afro-Cuban, European classical, and… well you get the picture.
Cosa Nostra Strings
A branch of the illustrious Jazz Mafia, Cosa Nostra Strings specializes in original Hybrid Crossover music. Ranging from acoustic heavy metal to power ballads and everything in between, they utilize their unique instrumentation of cello, viola, violin, trombone, bass, and percussion to the fullest extent. This five-piece powerhouse crew features conservatory-trained classical musicians who bring a provocative, precise, punk-rock personality to a highly distinguished multi-style sound. Spanning centuries of genres, you’ll hear diverse influences from around the world: funk infusion, folk, western chamber music, jazz, and most certainly 80’s rock ballads (because a set wouldn’t be quite complete without them!).
Cosa’s successful 2018 season included feature performances at SFJAZZ - where they were named young artists to look out for - Yerba Buena Gardens Festival, Point Richmond Jazz, Yoshi’s, UnderCover Presents, and an eight-week run with The Soiled Dove. They are heavily featured on GRAMMY-winning violinist Shaina Evoniuk’s recent release Hitwoman Honey, recently put out an EP entitled Shadows with soul singer Lilan Kane, and are currently working on their own debut album of original works to be released in 2019.
