An influential figure in new jazz for over three decades, Peter Apfelbaum has worked with some of the leading figures in contemporary music. Known as leader of the genre-mashing world music big band Hieroglyphics and the electronica/vocal-driven sextet Sparkler, Apfelbaum has also worked with the late Don Cherry (whose group Multikulti he was Musical Director of from 1989-1995, and which Jones was also a member of), Cecil Taylor, Harry Belafonte, Omar Sosa, Bill Laswell, Jai Uttal and Trey Anastasio, among others.
He has written for the Kronos Quartet, the National Swedish Radio Orchestra and Kamikaze Ground Crew. In addition to his own projects, he has also often returned to the Bay Area over the years in the various bands led by NY-based, Berkeley-bred trumpeter Steven Bernstein and Cuban-born drummer/composer Dafnis Prieto. In 2017, Apfelbaum was named an Artistic Director of Woodstock-based Creative Music Foundation, an organization dedicated to offering workshops by improvising musicians from diverse backgrounds. CMJ New Music Report has called Apfelbaum, "A visionary, galvanic composer like few others of his time.”
Josh Jones has been a Bay Area fixture since the 1970's and a longstanding member of Apfelbaum's various groups. In addition to leading the Josh Jones Latin Jazz Ensemble, he has worked with artists as diverse as Steve Coleman, David Murray, Chico Freeman, Yosvany Terry, Jacqui Naylor and Los Munequitos de Matanzas.
In this format, Apfelbaum's polyrhythmic approach to the piano - rooted in West African music, Gospel music and Jazz - is highlighted, in combination with Jones's mastery of Afro-Cuban rhythms. Tonight's performance will include pieces from Apfelbaum's soon-to-be-released solo piano CD, Songs Of The Tree Of Destiny, as well as material from the repertoire of Hieroglyphics and Multikulti, plus a cover or two.
